The Hyundai Nexo bests its predecessor, the Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell EV crossover, in every category, the automaker says. The Nexo’s electric motor output climbs to 120 kilowatts, from 100. Its driving range is extended 30 per cent, and its three hydrogen tanks can hold more fuel while weighing less. Hyundai says the Nexo delivers a full-tank driving distance 149 kilometres per 100 litres. The Nexo goes on sale in Canada in late 2018. “We have many options to be creative with the distribution, sales, and marketing channel,” Hyundai Canada said.

Building off the redesigned 2019 Mercedes-Benz G class that was unveiled last month in Detroit, the German automaker will be bringing the AMG variant to the Geneva show in March. The Mercedes-AMG G63 is powered by a 4.0-litre biturbo V-8 engine, good for 577 hp and a nine-speed automatic transmission. AMG-exclusive details include an AMG-specific radiator grille and AMG bumper with large side air inlets, Mercedes says. There's also a flared front and rear wheel arches and standard metallic paint. Details on its Canadian arrival will come later.

Most changes to Toyota's 2019 TRD Pro series, trail-ready trucks are cosmetic, including a new roof rack on the 4Runner and rigid fog lights and special wheels on the Tundra. There are some functional changes to the lineup. They will be available in fall 2018.

BMW tested a near-production camouflaged 8-series coupe on a high-speed proving ground in Aprilia, Italy, to optimize its driving dynamics. BMW Canada confirms the 8 Series will be sold in Canada. The exact timing has yet to be confirmed. It will rival the Mercedes S-class coupe.

Hyundai is teasing a sleek rendering of the new Veloster that debuts at the 2018 Detroit auto show. The new Veloster lineup will be available in Canada and take on the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Ford Focus ST and other high-performance hatchbacks. The base and turbo models likely will carry over the 1.6-litre four-cylinder while the N should get the same 2.0-litre turbo that makes 271 hp in the i30 N abroad. The Veloster N is based on a new lighter, stiffer platform and will feature high-end parts such as Brembo brakes.

The new Mercedes G class, which the automaker says has “done extremely well in Canada,” is getting some new features. They include an optional touch-control infotainment system with two 12.3-inch displays, carbon fibre trim materials, wireless charging and seats with massage functions.

Jaguar has been road-testing its first full-electric car, the I-Pace assembled on contract by Magna, ahead of its Canadian launch next year. A production prototype completed a 322-km test from Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, to Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, on a single charge.
