With the Great Recession over, is the North American auto industry about to see a major shakeup? That’s the question Peter Hall, the vice-president and chief economist at Economic Development Canada, tries to answer in a video posted on the agency’s website.
Hall says the “America first” sentiment, which U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated during his speech to Congress on Feb. 28, “has the industry on the defensive and wondering seriously about its next investments.”
Is a massive shift in production likely? “It’s possible,” Hall says. “This new wave of ‘America first’ thinking is not just troubling Mexico, Canadian producers are worried the ill feelings might also shift their way, forcing or suddenly coercing increased production stateside.
“Canadians also worry about their existing operations in Mexico, from Tier 1 suppliers on down,” he said.
