When Tammy Roach opens Prince Edward Island’s sole Mitsubishi dealership in Charlottetown early in 2019, she will be among only a handful of women running new-vehicle stores in Canada.
With almost 20 years in the automotive-retail sector, Roach, 46, serves as a role model for women, who currently make up only 23.5 per cent of personnel at dealerships.
“I didn’t go into this thinking, ‘I’m a woman.’ But I have a daughter, and she’s 11, and I do hope I’m paving the road for women in the future,” says Roach.
Roach said her dealership also will offer a hospitable environment for women customers, who influence at least 80 per cent of all vehicle sales, according to Statistics Canada. “I treat people right, and that the No. 1 thing that’s important in business.”
While opening Charlottetown Mitsubishi has been the most stressful challenges she’s faced, it’s also a “great opportunity.”
