RYAN LANYON
Manager of Transportation Policy and Innovation, City of Toronto
CHOSEN BECAUSE:
Ryan Lanyon, 43, is the City of Toronto’s lead on preparing the municipality for autonomous vehicles (AVs). In 2014, he worked with the city’s leaders in government, industry and academia to start planning for an AV future.
Lanyon built a team focused on the potential uses and implications of the technology and created the framework to put in place the first staff dedicated to preparing for AVs at any level of government, and only the second municipality in North America. These efforts have led to recognition of Toronto as a global leader in AV research and development. Lanyon’s team has developed an AV Tactical Plan that is designed to make TorontoAV-ready.
IN HIS OWN WORDS:
“Preparing for automated vehicles before they are commercially deployed is a once-in-a-century opportunity for governments, industry, stakeholders and the public to work together to create a better transportation system for everyone. This technology is changing quickly, and each day brings new and exciting challenges and opportunities.”
