BMW is electrifying the performance variant of its midsize crossovers.

The 2024 BMW X5 M and X6 M crossovers will be offered exclusively as Competition models — with a new V-8 engine with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, exterior design updates and the latest generation of BMW's iDrive control system.

The freshened M models will debut at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in March, with output starting in April at BMW's factory in Spartanburg, S.C. Deliveries begin in the summer.

The 2024 X5 M Competition begins at $142,000 and the sporty X6 M Competition starts at $145,000. Prices do not include shipping because BMW Canada allows its retailers to set their own delivery charges, based on a multitude of factors.

The X5 crossover is BMW's workhorse and bestseller in Canad and the United States. The German luxury automaker delivered 6,067 X5s in Canada in 2022 and 82,372 in the U.S. last year.

    GOING GREEN

    A new S68 4.4-litre V-8 engine generates 617 hp and propels the X5 and X6 M models from 0 to 60 mph — or 0 to 96 km/h — in 3.7 seconds.

An electric motor, integrated into the housing of the eight-speed transmission, delivers more pep when accelerating off the line and greater engine efficiency, BMW said. The electric motor also works as a crankshaft-mounted starter generator, creating a smoother engine startup and shut-off.

An updated gearbox features new gear ratios and sharper shift action. BMW said the shorter ratios in the first three gears help accelerate off the line, while the transmission's wider ratio spread increases the drive system's efficiency.

"Electrification delivers more power with fewer emissions," said Sam Fiorani, vice president at U.S.-based AutoForecast Solutions. "Expect the trend to continue as emission regulations tighten and performance brands look to dial up power."

    PERFORMANCE DESIGN

The updated M crossovers feature new front-end designs. The BMW kidney grille and central lower air intake form a single black area.

A model-specific spoiler lip in black forms the lower edge of the front apron on the new BMW X6 M Competition. BMW said it improves the "aerodynamic balance" of the coupe-like crossover and gives it a lower-to-the-ground stance.

Both M Competition models have an updated headlight design and an all-black BMW kidney grille.

The outline of the new M Shadowline headlight units is about an inch and a half narrower than on the outgoing models. The arrow-shaped elements point outward and serve as daytime running lights and turn signal indicators.

The lower air intake and side air intakes are open to help cool the high-performance engine and braking system.

The X5 M sports a new taillight design. The traditional L-shape is reflected horizontally, creating an "X" motif within the rear lights.

BMW's curved display anchors the dashboard. It combines a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display behind a single glass surface.

An "ambient light bar" with a crystalline surface structure and LED featuring the M logo is integrated in the front passenger trim area.
