Contrasting the sharp edges and angles of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Ioniq 6, shown above, is rounded and streamlined. The new sedan has the lowest coefficient of drag of Hyundai’s EVs, which the automaker says aids battery range. A first look shows a “cocoon-like” cabin built atop Hyundai’s E-GMP platform, which helps stretch interior space. The Ioniq 6 is projected to arrive in Europe later this year before making its North American debut.

Aggressive front styling and a slew of new standard technology and safety features greet buyers of the 2023 Altima. The four-model lineup gets standard all-wheel drive and a 182-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine. Exterior upgrades include LED lights while a 12.3-inch display, wireless phone charging and Wi-Fi hotspot are standard on the inside. Pricing has not been released, but the freshened Altima is scheduled to go on sale this fall.

Despite dropping the midsize Passat sedan from its lineup, Volkswagen does not think Canadians are finished with four-door cars. The automaker premiered its near-production ID Aero concept at the end of June, offering a glimpse of the brand’s first electric sedan. A sloping roof and smooth door handles trim the coefficient of drag to 0.23, helping the 77 kilowatt-hour battery provide up to 458 kilometres of range, the company said. The ID Aero is expected to arrive in Canada in 2024 following launches in China and Europe.

The second-generation subcompact crossover courts younger buyers with a sportier exterior, and a 158-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder replaces the 141-horsepower 1.8. The HR-V also grows in all dimensions for 2023, adding 22 centimetres of length and more than seven centimetres of width. Tech upgrades include a new seven-inch touchscreen plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The HR-V starts at $30,680, including the $1,950 destination fee.

    2023 SUBARU ASCENT

The brand’s largest vehicle — it has three rows of seats — gets a more prominent grille and redesigned LED headlights for 2023. There’s also a washer for the rear camera to keep the field of view clear while reversing. An 11.6-inch touchscreen is now standard, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All-wheel drive and a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder continue as standard. The updated Ascent will arrive at Canadian dealerships this fall. Pricing hasn’t been released.
