The name Grand Caravan will live on in Canada after all, but under a different brand.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Canada said Thursday it would offer customers a “new-generation Chrysler Grand Caravan” and confirmed to Automotive News Canada that the Chrysler Voyager will not be sold in Canada.
Instead the 2021 Chrysler Grand Caravan will look like the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica and cost about $5,000 more than the current entry-level Dodge Grand Caravan. The 2021 Pacifica will undergo some new styling for the 2021 model year.
The 2021 Chrysler Grand Caravan, which FCA Canada says is “designed with budget-friendly family customers in mind,” will have base price of $39,890, including shipping, while the 2020 entry-level Dodge Grand Caravan starts at $34,740, shipping included.
While FCA Canada hasn't announced 2021 pricing for the Chrysler Pacifica, the 2020 base price is also $39,890, with shipping.
Standard equipment and utilities on the 2021 Chrysler Grand Caravan will include seven-passenger seating and the Uconnect 4 system with a seven-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility. It will go on sale in the third quarter of 2020.
The Grand Caravan nameplate is now exclusive to the Canadian marketplace.
“Particularly here in Canada, that name has become synonymous with affordable, safe and innovative family transportation that the 2021 Chrysler Grand Caravan builds upon,” FCA Canada CEO David Buckingham said in a statement.
The Grand Caravan will be available in just two trims: The base Grand Caravan and the Grand Caravan SXT, which will start at $41,890, shipping included.
FCA is limiting the number of trim levels to just two because it says the base model of the Dodge Grand Caravan made up 20 per cent of total retail sales in 2019. The SXT trim (13 per cent) and Premium Plus trim (49 per cent) account for 62 per cent of all FCA Canada minivan sales.
Both the 2021 Grand Caravan and Grand Caravan SXT will be powered by a 3.6-litre Pentastar V-6 engine delivering 287 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque. There will be no hybrid option.
One of the automaker’s most innovative features will still be available. Eight-passenger seating and second-row Stow ’n Go fold-in-floor seats with in-floor storage are available in both trim levels. Second-row removable bucket seats are standard.
When comparing the current Dodge Grand Caravan Premium Plus package to the upcoming Chrysler Grand Caravan SXT trim, there is added equipment coming. It includes:
- Nine-speed automatic transmission with rotary e-shift;
- Available eight-passenger seating
- Uconnect 4 multimedia centre with seven-inch touchscreen;
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto;
- Keyless Enter n’ Go with proximity entry (driver's door);
- Active noise cancellation.
The current Dodge Grand Caravan Premium Plus starts at $45,840, or $4,050 more than the upcoming 2021 Chrysler Grand Caravan SXT.
The automaker has sold more than 15 million minivans globally since 1983, twice as many as any other manufacturer over the past 37 years. The Chrysler Grand Caravan, Chrysler Pacifica and Chrysler Voyager, which is sold in the United States, will be all be assembled at FCA’s Windsor Assembly Plant in Windsor, Ont. FCA Canada recently cut the midnight shift at the plant to better align with global demand.
About 1,300 people worked their last shift on July 10.
