The fifth-generation Prius retains wedgelike styling but is far more aerodynamic, and rides lower, for a sportier ride.

The dramatically redesigned 2023 Toyota Prius sedan makes its Canadian debut early next year.

It will be offered in two grades, XLE AWD and Limited AWD.

The 2023 Toyota Prius XLE AWD, starts at $38,310. It comes standard with 19-inch alloy wheels, an eight-inch touchscreen, heated steering wheel, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and more.

The Limited AWD starts at $44,810 It includes all standard XLE AWD features and adds a 12.3-inch touchscreen, JBL premium audio system with eight speakers, a fixed glass roof, heated and ventilated front seats, a power back door, a digital key, a panoramic view monitor, digital rearview mirror, advanced park, and front and rear parking assist with automatic braking and more.

The Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 System is standard on both.

Under the hood, the 2023 Prius has a larger 2.0-litre engine and a revised hybrid system that delivers more than 60 per cent additional combined system horsepower. It has a 196 net horsepower, up from 121 of the outgoing model. Maximum engine torque for the new generation climbs nearly 16 per cent, up to 139 pound fee of torque from 120.

Combined fuel consumption stands at 4.8 litre per 100 kilometres.

Engineers have repackaged the plug-in's battery. It used to be under the rear cargo area. Now, it's under the seats, delivering more space in the back to haul things.

    NEW STYLING

Updated styling of this generation starts with a front face that employs the new hammerhead language seen in the bZ4X all-electric crossover.

The car keeps its hatchback configuration. But it is lower and wider than the current model and just a tad bit longer with a longer wheelbase. The cabin's roof peak is also pulled back for a sportier, rear-slung look.

The rear door handle is hidden in the window frame, a trick pulled from Toyota's C-HR.

Around the back, Toyota ditches the love-it-or-leave-it zig-zag taillights for a minimalist light bar that stretches across behind and dips into the rear fender with a neat corner crease.

New colours, Cutting Edge and Guardian Gray, are available alongside Wind Chill Pearl, Black, Supersonic Red or Reservoir Blue.

The 2023 Prius, imported from Japan, is expected to arrive in dealerships in the first quarter of 2023.
