Bosch’s virtual visor uses AI to darken the windshield where sunlight might be impeding vision.
After navigating a virtual show in 2021, major automotive suppliers and startups will once again have a chance to showcase their new technology during CES.
Emerging technologies in electrification, advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous driving will take center stage this week as the industry rolls out more electric vehicles and continues to invest in self-driving R&D.
Here is a sampling of what some major suppliers and startups are planning.
Canadian supplier Magna International Inc. plans to display its new electric powertrain, called the EtelligentReach.
In a news release, Magna said it can increase range up to 90 miles over "certain production [battery-electric] vehicles in this segment" by using a software package that controls various functions and increases efficiency.
The company said the system will make its debut on a "new entrant vehicle" this year.
German supplier Robert Bosch's plans include a show car that it says will demonstrate its software, hardware and "systems expertise." As an example, the company said it was developing "central computers for the electronics architecture of the future," which Bosch said will be used in advanced driver-assistance systems, body electronics and cockpit functions.
It also plans to show off other technology it has developed, including a "virtual visor," which Bosch says uses artificial intelligence to darken the portion of the windshield where sunlight might be impeding a driver's vision, while leaving the rest of the windshield unchanged.
French supplier Valeo's press conference Tuesday, Jan. 4, will feature Christophe Perillat, the company's deputy CEO, who will take over as CEO at the end of January. Valeo is looking to showcase its solutions for autonomous driving systems and driver-assist systems, including its third-generation lidar.
The supplier revealed the lidar system in November, saying it improves upon the second-generation's resolution by 17 times and "reconstructs a 3D real-time image of the vehicle's surroundings at a rate of 4.5 million pixels and 25 frames per second." It is set to make its market debut in 2024, according to the company.
A spokesman for ZF Friedrichshafen said in an email that the German supplier plans to highlight "key partnerships" with major tech companies such as Microsoft and startups such as software company Apex.AI.
In late 2021, ZF expanded its partnership with Microsoft to digitize all of its processes on the tech company's Azure cloud platform. ZF said the Microsoft partnership would boost its autonomous shuttle business as well as allow for better manufacturing processes, among other benefits.
ZF also said in December that it acquired a stake in Apex.AI, which the company said would allow it to develop new software based on Apex's operating system.
German supplier Continental — another investor in Apex.AI — was not planning to be featured on the main show floor, instead opting for a "private exhibit" at a hotel near the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Continental promises to showcase some of its latest innovations, including its Transparent Vehicle system, one of four Conti systems to receive a CES Innovation Award in November. The system employs four cameras around the vehicle and a company algorithm to create an "unobstructed view of the surroundings from any angle, which allows for safer low-speed maneuvers and parking," the supplier said in a news release.
