Hyundai Canada began accepting pre-orders for the Ioniq 5 compact crossover, the automaker’s first EV on a dedicated platform.
A pre-order requires a $500 deposit and comes with an estimated delivery date of fall 2021.
Limited quantities will be available at Hyundai Canada dealerships across the country, and pricing will be announced closer to start of sales later this year.
The Ioniq 5 is part of Hyundai Motor Group’s plan to introduce 23 BEV models and sell one million BEV units worldwide by 2025.
“The market and its offerings are evolving,” Hyundai Canada CEO Don Romano said in a statement. “The Canadian customer is steadily starting to embrace the idea of driving electric, and in signature Hyundai style, we are ready to meet them there with what they expect, and more.”
The Ioniq 5 will face rivals such as the Ford Mach-E, Volkswagen ID4, Tesla Model Y and Kia EV6 from Hyundai's corporate sibling next year.
The Ioniq 5 will come with two battery options in Canada at launch. The standard offering is a 58 kWh battery, but there is a larger 77.4 kilowatt-hour battery available.
The vehicle will be offered in five trims: Essential Standard Range (rear-wheel drive only), Preferred Standard Range (rear-wheel drive only), Preferred LR Ultimate Package with all-wheel drive, Preferred AWD Long Range and Preferred RWD Long Range. The first two trims get 354 kilometres of range. The Ultimate gets 400 kilometres while the Preferred AWD version comes with 435 kilometres of range and the Preferred RWD Long Range gets 480.
