The Mercedes-Benz EQS 580, the luxury automaker’s flagship electric sedan, began arriving at dealerships this month and will start at $144,200, before shipping.
The EQS sedan is Mercedes-Benz’s fully electric rival to the Tesla Model S. The company didn’t immediately say how much delivery will cost.
The car is powered by a 107.8-kilowatt-hour battery that delivers up to 547 km of range, based on U.S. EPA testing.
It’s capable of being charged with up to 200 kilowatts at fast-charging stations with direct current, which can charge from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in approximately 31 minutes.
The sedan has sports car-like performance, delivering up to 516 hp and with a 0-to-60 mph time — or 0-to-96 km/h — of up to 4.1 seconds.
Rear-axle steering — capable of a steering angle of up to 10 degrees — allows the more than 17-foot-long sedan to have the maneuverability of a compact car.
Inside, the cockpit is anchored by a 56-inch curved high-resolution "Hyperscreen" that stretches from A-pillar to A-pillar and combines three screens — a 17.7-inch centre display flanked by a pair of 12.3-inch screens.
Vehicles also come equipped with the latest generation of MBUX, which stands for Mercedes-Benz User Experience, the automaker’s advanced multimedia infotainment system that uses artificial intelligence. It now offers an intuitive new zero-layer concept ensuring key applications are always at the top level of the screen so that the driver no longer needs to scroll through submenus or give voice commands to access commonly used applications.
The EQS, packed with up to 350 sensors, boasts smart tech and spacious displays.
The EQS is built on a new electric vehicle platform called EVA2.
Mercedes plans to launch three new all-electric vehicle platforms in 2025 and set up eight battery factories with partners, the company said in a strategy update in mid-2021.
“This milestone signifies the beginning of the Mercedes-EQ era in Canada,” Mercedes-Benz Canada CEO Eva Wiese said in a statement.
She called the EQS “the first of what will be an incredible lineup of Mercedes-EQ vehicles coming to our market.”
”We look forward to continuing the hard work we’ve started with all of our dealer partners as we execute Mercedes-Benz Canada’s transition to ‘electric only’ in the years to come,” Wiese said.
