Unifor is leaning toward picking Ford Motor Co. of Canada Ltd. as the target automaker for this year’s contract negotiations, as the union looks to seize a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to set the benchmark for what good jobs look like in the electric vehicle era.
Union President Lana Payne said no final decision has been made, but Unifor is “seriously considering” setting this year’s collective bargaining pattern with the Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker.
“There is a continuity with Ford that we see as advantageous. In 2020, Ford was the first to step up with commitments to the new EV investments, and we are now on the cusp of seeing those investments come to fruition at Oakville. I see this as a bit of unfinished business for our union.”
